The Fallow Deer, native to the Mediterranean region of Europe and Asia Minor, has also established a notable presence across 93 counties in Texas, predominantly within the Edwards Plateau region. By 1988, the population in Texas was estimated to be 14,163, encompassing both free-ranging and confined animals. This species has adapted well to its new habitat, thriving under the regional wildlife management regulations.
Adult male Fallow Deer typically stand between 32 and 48 inches high at the shoulder and can weigh up to 200 pounds. The antlers of the Fallow Deer are a distinctive feature, broadly palmated with several small tines and a large heal-tine arising from the back of the palm. A robust set of Fallow antlers will measure at least 28 inches in length, boast an inside span of 24 inches or more, and may include upwards of 20 points, making them a prized find for licensed hunters.
