Nilgai (also called the blue bull) were introduced to Texas in the early 1900s and have become one of the most challenging exotic game animals to hunt. Mature bulls are large-bodied and tough, often standing roughly 3.5–5 feet at the shoulder and commonly weighing 500+ pounds (many bulls can be heavier).
 
Because of their size and durability, nilgai are most commonly hunted with rifles. Many hunters choose calibers in the .270 class and up (often stepping into .30 caliber and larger) and focus on ethical shot placement and appropriate ammunition for a clean harvest.
 
Nilgai behavior can vary by season and herd structure. Bulls may be encountered alone or in small groups, while cows and calves are often seen separately except during the rut. Nilgai thrive in drier country and adapt well to the Texas Hill Country environment.
The nilgai’s scientific name is Boselaphus tragocamelus, and it is native to India. A permit is required for all hunting activities, ensuring responsible and regulated wildlife management.
