Sable antelope are native to Africa and are prized worldwide for their bold markings and impressive horns. Sable are born brown, then darken with age—mature bulls often turning very dark to black—while retaining contrasting white facial markings.
 
Both males and females carry horns, with bulls typically heavier and longer. Adult males commonly weigh in the 450–500 pound range, with females often somewhat lighter. Trophy horn length varies by animal and age class.
 
Because sable are large-bodied and durable, hunters commonly choose centerfire rifles and appropriate ammunition and prioritize ethical shot placement for a clean harvest.
