The Scimitar-Horned Oryx (Oryx Dammah) is Native to Northern Africa, but is now believed to be extinct in the wild. The Scimitar Horned Oryx was introduced to breeding programs in the 1960’s, and in 1996, there were approximately 2,200 Scimitar-Horned Oryx found on Ranches in the Hill Country (Kerrville, San Antonio, Junction) region of Texas.
The Scimitar Horned Oryx are white with a chestnut neck and chest in color, and their face and leg markings cocoa to beige. The Scimitar Horned Oryx calves are born orange and tan. All Scimitar Horned Oryx grow long, ringed horns that tilt backwards, sometimes diverging very widely.
Scimitar Oryx band together with other types of Oryx and frequently hybridize producing fertile hybrids. Hybrids with Addax resemble Addax, and 2nd generation hybrids with Arabian Oryx resemble Arabian Oryx. The Scimbok is also a common Hybrid with a Gemsbok Oryx.

Why the Scimitar Horned Oryx Is a True Conservation Trophy
Hunting a Scimitar Horned Oryx in Texas is more than a trophy pursuit—it’s a way to connect with conservation history. Once native to North Africa, this stunning antelope is now extinct in the wild. Thanks to Texas-based breeding and conservation programs, particularly on Hill Country ranches, the species thrives in managed habitats where hunters can contribute to its legacy.
The Scimitar Horned Oryx stands out not just for its dramatic appearance—white coat, chestnut neck, and iconic backward-curving horns—but also for its size and challenge. Males can exceed 470 lbs, and horns often surpass 40 inches, with record-class trophies reaching up to 46 inches. At TX Hunt Lodge, hunters can select from multiple ranches, including properties with older, high-scoring bulls.
With no seasonal limitations, these hunts are available year-round and accommodate any hunting style—whether it’s spot and stalk, safari-style, or from a blind. Every hunt is personalized based on your experience level, weapon of choice, and physical ability.
The species’ genetic uniqueness and its history of successful hybridization with other oryx types (like Addax and Gemsbok) also make it a fascinating pursuit for serious collectors. Trophy and meat quality are both outstanding, and TX Hunt Lodge has a track record of setting multiple world records for Scimitar Oryx.
For hunters seeking a meaningful, exotic, and elite big game challenge, the Scimitar Horned Oryx delivers an unforgettable experience rooted in both history and sport.
