Thomson’s gazelle (Eudorcas thomsonii), often called the “tommy,” originates from East Africa’s grassland habitats, including the Serengeti region of Tanzania and Kenya. They are one of the most recognized gazelle species and are prized for their speed, alertness, and classic plains-game look.
 
Adult Thomson’s gazelle typically stand roughly 2–3 feet tall and weigh around 30–40 pounds. They have a light brown coat with a distinctive dark side stripe and a white belly. Thomson’s gazelle are sometimes confused with Grant’s gazelle—one common field distinction is that Grant’s typically show a more prominent white rump that extends higher above the tail.
 
Because they are smaller-bodied and often hunted in more open country, many hunters choose flat-shooting centerfire rifles and appropriate ammunition (or archery equipment where conditions allow) and prioritize ethical shot placement for a clean harvest.
